Why Breakers Trip More in Summer

Every June, our call volume for “breaker keeps tripping” roughly doubles. There are real reasons: breakers are thermal devices, your panel likely lives in a 130°F garage, and summer is when every big load in the house runs at once. Here’s what’s actually happening and how to tell a nuisance trip from a warning.
Four reasons summer trips spike
- Breakers derate in heat. A breaker’s trip threshold is calibrated around 104°F ambient; in a Phoenix garage running 125–140°F, it trips earlier than its rating. The breaker isn’t broken — it’s doing thermal math.
- Your AC is the biggest load in the house — and start-up draw (inrush) is several times running draw. A compressor starting on a marginal circuit or with a tired capacitor is the classic summer trip.
- Everything runs at once: AC + pool pump + fridge working overtime + dryer at 5pm is a load profile your panel never sees in February.
- Loose connections get looser. Heat cycles expand and contract every connection in the panel; marginal ones become resistive, make their own heat, and push nearby breakers over the line.
Nuisance trip or warning sign?
- Trips once under obvious heavy load, resets clean: probably load management — spread the big appliances out.
- Same breaker trips repeatedly: stop resetting it. Repeated resets into a fault is how insulation cooks. That circuit needs diagnosis.
- Breaker is hot to the touch, buzzes, or smells: shut it off and call — that’s a failing breaker or connection, not a load problem.
- AC breaker trips every afternoon: have both the AC (capacitor/compressor) and the circuit checked — it’s a race between which one is dying.

Common Questions
Can I just install a bigger breaker so it stops tripping?
No — and anyone who offers to should worry you. Breaker size protects the wire in the wall; a bigger breaker on the same wire removes the protection and lets the wire overheat. The fix is finding why the circuit overloads, or running a new circuit.
How much does it cost to fix a repeatedly-tripping breaker?
Diagnosis is $89 (waived with repair). Common fixes: a failed breaker ($150–$250), a loose or damaged connection ($150–$300), or a new dedicated circuit ($250–$600) when the real problem is too much on one line.
Does a hot garage really affect the panel?
Measurably. Ambient heat subtracts from every breaker’s headroom and accelerates aging of the panel’s connections and insulation — one reason Arizona panels retire younger than the national average.
